No Easter Candy for Them!

It's a long holiday weekend - one where we indulge our kids with all manner of unhealthy eating. The news here has been full of the neat candies our local small businesses make for holidays like this. One I saw that was cute was a version of "bacon and eggs" made out of candy. [link may only be active for this holiday...if you're reading this later in April 2007... sorry you missed it.]

One important thing I hope everyone is aware of is that we shouldn't be feeding candy - especially chocolate - to our pets. Yes, we love them just like they were human, but they're not. In light of the seriousness of the pet food recall and its continued worry, I think a reminded that pets are not people is in order for this weekend.

Many, many years ago when I was a stupid new parent - but thought I was a smart pet owner - I put out an Easter basket for my three year old daughter, the night before Easter... and totally forgot that the dog was following my every steEaster_pupsp.

Naturally, he got up during the night, rescued the basket of goodies from its hiding place... and ate everything in it! I'll give this to him - he managed to remove the cellophane before having his sweet feast. And, he never did get sick. Amazingly. [I don't think we should torture our pets by dressing them up like the cute pups here, either. But, I have to admit they're adorable - I just want to hug them! See more at this link.]

I was so angry at first - until I realized how it was all my fault. And then, I did have to watch him all day long. But, he weathered it well. Still, this is only a reminder of what NOT to do.

Protect your pets - dogs and cats, alike. Don't leave candy out where they can get it.

I recently wrote a post about all-natural cat and dog food. I thought you pet lovers out their might be interested. Most generic pet foods on the market are primarily carbohydrates but cats and dogs are carnivores. You can read more at: http://thisgreenlife.wordpress.com/2007/04/26/a-healthy-diet/
