Couldn't resist sharing, although I do worry that mentioning this here - in public - will negate all the great progress we've made.
Regular readers will remember that Carmel, my half-Shepard, half-Lab, puppy of almost 14 years has suffered from a severe and debilitating lick granuloma on her right back leg, for...what seems like, ever. Forever.
A few months ago, after a visit to the vet where I got little or no good advice (Try an Elizabethan collar, they said; been there, done that, didn't work, I said. Try wrapping it up, they said. Been there, done that... try, try... they did not have any answers so we left heavy-hearted. But, they tried, I give them that.)
Well, I decided to try something ridiculous. At least to me it was ridiculous. I put a sock on Carmel's leg and tied it, gently, with a shoelace. And, it worked. She did not try to get it off. She did not lick through it. She actually seemed to like it.
Today, she is sock free. Well, she's been without sock for two days. I don't know if that's "sock free." I do not notice her bothering the leg, at all. We have the numerous socks she's been wearing all clean and ready to be put back on, at the first sign of licking. But... the leg is clean, healed, and almost like new. What a miracle!
Of course, AFTER I put our sock on Carmel (one of mine, actually... maybe it made her feel closer to me, I don't know), I discovered the Strock, which I've talked about before. This is a great idea and if you are struggling with this problem, it can't hurt to check the Strock out. The response to it has been very positive - as you can see if you visit their website, Best Buddy Pet Products.
So, in conclusion, Carmel is sockless. I'm so happy about it - and so amazed that this little solution did the trick. Who woulda thunk it?
Stay tuned for tomorrow's Scratchings and Sniffings Out Loud podcast with Dr. Larry. More good conversation on pets.

I'm a strong believer in socks, myself! Good lick--er, luck--with everything!
