A good blogger friend, Paul Chaney, introduced a few of his friends on Facebook to this really neat new
place online: The Pet Realty Network. Now, you have a place to go to find out how you can make your move - across town or across the county - easier on your pet. Naturally, they focus on dogs...but cats are included, too. I love their blog - the cartoon dog, cat and horse are delightful. The most recent post is about Dogs. It's a book review and well worth your time. Hop over and read it.
Unfortunately, the writer does not link to Amazon nor the author's/publisher's website so, if you want to buy the book, you'll have to do your own searching. This just seems to be right on track with the content Dr. Larry and I have been sharing on Scratchings and Sniffings Out Loud.
Now, on to the really good stuff. Not that the pet realty network and the natural history of dogs isn't good stuff...but I discovered this outstanding website that makes Medical Alert Tags for pets: Pet Health Alert. Wow! They were created out of the destruction we all know as Katrina... in response to the many, many animals that were either abandoned or had to be left behind. I try to understand that - the instinct to rescue yourself and your family and, if the situation is critical, leaving your dog or cat behind. It's HARD to imagine... impossible... but, I think in many cases we're talking elderly folk who agonized over leaving their pet behind...with the hope of returning to claim him or her. When the rescue boat or whatever says no pets, what do you do?
This site gets into the nitty-gritty of helping manage those kinds of disaster events - by tagging your pet. If your dog or cat runs away (and let's face it, they do...when they're scared), you can now feel a bit safe knowing their tag will tell anyone who finds them that they have a home.
The only cost is for shipping. Tags are free. And they cover more than Katrina disastors - they cover medical emergencies, too. Like seizures, special needs, being deaf or blind...and more. Check it out.

Hi Rhona, I can certainly understand why you don't link to Amazon, now that you've explained. Thank you for the information on where to buy the book. Let me know if I can help in any other way. I'm in full support of your work.

Yvonne - Better late than never in finding your absolutely marvelous Blog and thanks so much for mentioning our Web sites. The only reason that I did not link to Amazon.com was that I have been doing quite a bit of blogging about Dog Fighting and the Michael Vick case. The Humane Society of the United States has been attempting to get Amazon.com to stop selling dog fighting, cock fighting, etc books and I fully support the HSUS position; therefore, I do not link to Amazon.com for purely personal reasons. I am certain, however, that local bookshops can order Dogs, A Natural History, if they do not stock it.
