When my kids were little they used to ask me, "Mommy, if the house were burning down, who would you save first?"
Well, I always answered, "You, of course," to each kid, in turn. And, as they got older, I'd say, "Maybe you should be thinking about running in to save me."
Beyond all that, I was concerned about the pets. I have often wondered what would happen if there were a major catastrophe like a fire or a tornado... how would I get Carmel and Wabby out?
Turns out, I can rest easy. They now make oxygen masks for pets! An article online talks about training fire fighters on how to use these oxygen masks...which come in sizes for different kinds of animals. At this site, Best Friends Pet Care, there's an article on donating the funds to purchase these masks for the North Plainfield fire Department. They called it the "Cause for Paws" fund. Cute.
We read stories about dogs and cats saving US from fires and disaster, but it's nice to know that there are options out there to protect them during a crisis, also. The recognition that pets are important is growing, exponentially, I think. According to this report at Pet Education, "The trend started in Florida about a year ago...[and] it has just kind of snowballed since then." A firefighter in the article is quoted saying, "This is a home run for us and pet lovers."
Indeed.
