I'm a pet lover. I love all pets but I'm especially fond of dogs and cats. That doesn't rule out ferrets - some of my friends have ferrets and those little guys and gals are a delight. The one shown here is called Snotface and he's a bundle of laughs. I also hear that chickens are pets, these days. Of course, we shouldn't leave out horses, either.
If you really push me, I have to admit it's not just 'pets' that move me to tears, on a regular basis. It's all animals. It's donkeys and sheep and pigs and cows and wolves and bears and ... all creatures great and small. Well, except insects. I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't dislike insects but I do.
As a member of a growing online community of devoted animal lovers called BlogPaws, I get to see reports from all over the world on the ways people abuse and neglect animals. It's appalling and horrifying and downright criminal, although for the most part the humans who perpetrate this cruelty on innocent animals don't pay for their crimes. They just continue to do ... what they do. And, those in authority continue to pretend it doesn't concern them.
I cannot imagine the horror this dog lived with for 10 years. Her story made me cry like a baby. The abuse she endured is unacceptable. That the people who perpetrated the abuse will never have to pay for it, makes me furious.

A history of improving animal health
Morris Animal Foundation was established in 1948 by Dr. Mark L. Morris Sr., a visionary veterinarian who believed there was a need for a foundation that solely addressed animal health and welfare. Dr. Morris was a veterinarian, humanitarian and animal health pioneer who was one of the first veterinarians to use diet to control disease.
One of Dr. Morris’s first patients was Buddy, who was among the first guide dogs in the United States. Buddy suffered from kidney failure, and his owner, Morris Frank, then the national ambassador for the Seeing Eye, sought Dr. Morris’s advice. Dr. Morris created a special diet that dramatically improved Buddy’s health, and soon he and his wife, Louise, were canning the food in their kitchen.
When they couldn’t keep up with demand, they partnered with the Hill Packing Company to produce what later became the first Hill’s Pet Nutrition Prescription Diet. Dr. Morris used the royalties from that diet to establish Morris Animal Foundation, and the first two studies funded looked at nutrition in cats and dogs.

This won't really be about BlogPaws, but it comes out of the chatter at BlogPaws.
Aren't pet people the best people? Our closing keynote, Francois, who is the co-author of The Hyper-Social Organization, showed that pet people are more likely to give back, than just your average person. We support shelters and projects and each other at a higher rate than the average citizen. But, of course!
The conference brought about 375 people together (more were registered but that pesky hurricane kept them away) and throughout the weekend I heard over and over that people were thrilled at getting a chance to not only meet their blogger-buddies, but their blogger-buddies pets. We had tons of dogs, cats, a guinea pig, and three ferrets in attendance.
There were a collective 400 people (at least! we had last minute registrations and walk-ins!) at BlogPaws last weekend. Despite the intrusion of a hurricane and an earthquake, BlogPaws went on as planned! (check out this pic of a group of BlogPaws-ers dissing Hurricane Irene in front of the hotel!)
You can read all about it on the BlogPaws' blog, or on many other blogs - attendees have been writing about it for a few days, including talk the hurricane and how it not only disrupted the conference, but disrupted their homes. We are thankful that, so far, all of our pet people are safe, albeit, some are struggling with the after-effects of this disaster.
Here's what I want to talk about - I want to talk about the pets. We had around 50 dogs, several cats, a guinea pig, and three ferrets at the conference. And some amazingly adorable puppies that Royal Canin brought along, for adoption. I hear, one got adopted! W00t!

The city was identified as Windsor. Windsor... what??? We have a Windsor here in CO and it's not too far from where I live. At first, that's the town I thought you were writing about. However, before I could commit to writing about the pet pantry, I wanted to know if the story was 'local' or not.
