"What did you do with Tom, Mom?"
Hey, I give lottsa love to my puppies and my kitty. I couldn't love them more if I tried! I mean, really... they get hugs and kisses and treats and all that baby talk, "Who wuvs her wittle puppies and kitty? Mommie does, dat's who!" accompanies by those little kissy sounds and big hugs...so, why...why...why... when Tom is out of town do they go into their, "OMD! The world is coming to an end cause Dad's not here!" act?
Seriously. They moan and cry and sit by the door. They whine and sigh and stare at the door. Every now and then they turn to look at me with that sad-mopey stare that says, "Where did he go? Did you make him go away? When is he coming back?"

"Why isn't Tom back yet, Mom?"
Hey, what am I, chopped liver?
Tom had to go on a business trip this week. He was gone for three days. Three little days. Mind you, they did seem to stretch on forever - I sure do miss him, too! But, I was here. And life went on. The dogs were let out to bark at passersby, and at each other, and nose the back fence when the dog behind us popped out to complain at them. The weather was superb so they could be outdoors a whole lot. Plus, Twiggy and Onyx, their erstwhile cousins, were here, also.
I fed them. I showered them with attention. I played with them. I made sure to give them meatballs for dinner... (after their dog food...don't ask...I'll tell you about that some other time)... but, were they satisfied? Nope. Not the Collins-DiVita dogs! Not the cat... Molly just wandered around meowing all day long, it seemed!

Ok...it was mostly Emily. Emily is the one who is totally attached to Tom. Sort of like a back pocket. She was sure he had merely gone out for takeout - he does that now and then. The dogs are tuned in to Tom's leaving around dinnertime and returning with good smelling stuff. Which we often share with them. Hence, Emily sitting by the back door as if...he was going to come through it at any moment... with tasty morsels, just for her!
Well, he's home. We're all happy now. Emily was ecstatic... Olive and Chester heaved a sigh of relief. And, Molly ceased meowing as if the world was/is coming to an end.
Life is back to normal. Whatever that is.
